The Origins of Saffiano Leather

In 1913, a craftsman named Mario Prada (does that name sound familiar?) and his brother Martino pioneered the legend of Saffiano leather. This fashion-forward duo operated a high-end leather goods store called Fratelli Prada (Prada Brothers) in Milan, specializing in everything from handbags and accessories to English steamer trunks.

Thanks to their exquisite craftsmanship and elegant designs, Fratelli Prada quickly earned a stellar reputation among the aristocracy. Over time, the brothers noticed a growing demand for luxury travel accessories among Europe’s elite. Seizing this opportunity, they set out to develop a new type of leather that combined durability with premium quality. Collaborating with one of Milan’s top tanneries, they experimented with a unique embossing technique applied to fine calfskin. After extensive trials, they finally created the iconic Saffiano crosshatch pattern that remains in use today.

In 1913, the brothers launched their first (and patented) Saffiano handbag. Blending elegance with resilience, the accessory quickly became a favorite among European royalty and jet-setting aristocrats. The overwhelming success of Saffiano leather even led Prada to become the official supplier to the Italian Royal Family in 1919, solidifying its status as a globally recognized brand—elements of the Italian Royal Coat of Arms still appear in its logo today.

After the patent expired, other brands began replicating the signature Saffiano texture. While Prada continues to use premium calfskin, many competitors have turned to more affordable alternatives (such as Saffiano PVC or vegan leather) to cut costs. Today, the appeal of this distinctive pattern has transcended materials and craftsmanship, becoming a timeless symbol of style.
